A cat should have a good safe hiding place, where it can be left alone until it perceives that things are safe. The cat will usually pick one of its own, but it should have access to its food bowl, water and litter box.

Close room doors when possible to make the cat feel more secure. This is extremely important when company comes to visit or you have a noisy party. Giving a cat as a gift at a noisy party, can freak the cat out, because it violates its comfort factor. Take the time to introduce the cat quietly.

Cats have a social organization that is flexible and allows them to share their territory with other cats. Some times they are accepting of another cat and sometimes they do not - just like people, who have just met someone new. Liking and disliking, on a moments notice. One may want to play and the other may not. Their time as a kitten may determine the likelihood of their desire to be sociable.

When cats have been introduced, they may want to fight to protect territory or establish dominance. Many cat training e-books will tell you NOT TO allow a fight to happen or to continue, if one happens. Make a loud noise, such as yelling HEY. Use a spray bottle with clean water and spray them once or twice from a distance. A clean, well washed out used cleaner bottle will work nicely. They will probably be on the run for their safeafe place before you can get the second spray out.

DO NOT try to physically separate them or in their passion of the moment, they may be aggressive toward you. Be very careful in handling, while a cat is fearful. Their instinct is for self protection. When they have reached their safe hiding place, close the door and give them a time out, just as you would a child.

Be consistent with your water bottle treatment and the time outs. Other punishment may cause further bad behavior and fear. The cat may become aggressive toward you, if it preceives you as a threat. It is NOT acceptable to them, for you to hurt them in your temporary anger. Be loving after the time out, so that the cat knows you love them, but that there are limits to be lived by.

A cat will usually react to fear with 3 Fs - fight - freeze - flee - sometimes loss of bladder/ bowel control. A cat may also puff out its fur, hiss or spit. What causes the fear? Figure it out and fix the problem. Some things that cause fear are a person, children, other animals or loud noises such as a vacuum cleaner being used.

One example we had, was the putting on of a ski hat and sunglasses when Winter came. It freaked out our recently rescued cat the first few times it happened. He had a bad memory?

DO NOT force a fearful thing/ person on them. Introduce at a safe distance - slowly. Feed the cat a treat and praise them for accepting the new thing/ person. Remember that animals have a better inner radar than we do, about people and the vibes they give off. Trust their judgment.

Routines and schedules are important for the well being of your cat. Be as consistent as possible. They want the same things to occur each day in the same way and at the same time.

Play time before bed time will help to ensure a good sleep. The more leaping, jumping and running the better. Remember that cats are noctural by nature. They like to play at night and tiring them out will help them sleep. If you sit down to watch a TV program, that you watch each day, the commercial breaks are a great time to brush your cat and play with it.

What is a chocolate Persian or Himalayan kitten?

Many people are surprised to find out that there is actually a chocolate gene in breeding Persian and Himalayans. First, it's important to know that all Himalayans are a Persian; just a type of Persian. The Himalayan has Siamese in it's background and one can tell a Himmy by their dark 'points' and blue eyes. The points are the ears, head, tail and paws.

Unlike the other genetic colors of black and red and white, in order to have a 'visual' chocolate, both parents have to carry the chocolate gene. That's what makes a chocolate Persian or Himalayan more rare.

Each color has a dominate and a dilute, or recessive color of the particular gene. With the black gene, it's blue; with the red gene, it's cream; and with the chocolate gene, it is lilac.

With me so far? So, a Himalayan (which are always 'pointed') you can have a chocolate pointed Himalayan or a lilac point Himalayan. You can also have a chocolate cream or a lilac cream Himalayan. If you see little patches of 'cream' on the nose or paws, you have a color-cream point. There is also a chocolate tortoishell point. Only females can be cream or tortie points.

Now, there are many more chocolate possiblities with a Persian. You can a chocolate tortoishell (very rare) or a chocolate tabby (even more rare!) There are also chocolate and white bi colors, chocolate calicos, and chocolate smoke Persians. And then of course, the dilute, lilac is also possible in all these markings.

What is most fun being a breeder of Persians and Himalayans is the surprise each litter brings. Since all chocolate Persians are CPC (which mean they carry the pointed gene), pairing a chocolate Persian and a pointed Himalayan will always give you a unique litter; of some Persians and some Himalayans. It's always like Christmas!

The Singapura cat is a small, well built cat that can take up to 2 years to reach full maturity. The eyes are characteristically large and are typically yellow, hazel or green in color. The coat of Singapura is short, fine and silky to the touch. Colors can range from light beige to dark brown. Males weigh in at about 6 to 8 pounds and females from 5 to 6 pounds. It can take as long as 2 years for the Singapura to fully mature.

The Singapura will show a curious interest in most everything you do and will try to help out. These unique cats are affectionate, alert and their intelligence is obvious in their behavior.

Brief History of the Singapura Cat

The Singapura comes from Singapore and is the Malaysian name for this island. Hal and Tommy Meadow brought this breed to the United States in the 1970s. By 1982, the Singapura was recognized as breed by most registries and clubs. The Cat Fanciers Association recognized the Singapura for show competition in 1988.

The ancestor of all domestic cats is the African Wildcat, the genus Felis Lybica. This genus is comprised of smaller cats. Cats are thought to have been domesticated with the advent of farming and the storage of grain. The grain attracted rats and other vermin which naturally attracted wild cats. As time evolved, certain of these cats were domesticated for the mutual benefit of both cat and man. The African Wildcat has certain features which is obvious in the housecat of today.

Feline Health Considerations

Cats who reside in the house should generally visit the veterinarian yearly, unless health problems are evident. Cats who enjoy the outdoors may need to see the vet as many as four times a year. When you take your cat to the vet, be sure to bring along a fresh stool sample so the vet can do a fecal exam to check for internal parasites such as tapeworm, round worm, whip worms and hook worms. The vet will also check for external parasites such as fleas, ticks and ear mites.

Any vet check should include a dental examination and a cleaning if necessary. Sometimes we don't realize how much stress our cats face. It may be hard to believe, but being an indoor cat is stressful for felines. We keep them inside for their own safety, but this is an unnatural environment for felines. They do like to prowl around, especially at night. Hunting for food provides lots of exercise that keeps them in shape. 

We also feed them the wrong type of diet, which is another stressor. Most dry cat foods are made mostly from corn, which is very high in carbohydrates. Too much of the wrong type of food leads to obesity, feline diabetes, and other health issues. 

Something that many cat owners don't consider is that the moisture level in dry cat food is extremely low. Cats are meant to get most of their water from their diet, which should be mostly meat-based. A cat who is always fed dry food is more than likely chronically dehydrated. Even if a cat who is fed dry food does drink water, it's hard for him to drink enough.

The problem with a dehydrated cat is that water doesn't pass through his body often enough to flush out toxins. His urine is also concentrated. Urine is caustic, and if it's too concentrated, it can irritate the bladder, which leads to cystitis. Concentrated urine also has high mineral levels, which can result in cat bladder stones, and urinary blockage in cats.

This type of stress is low-level, but it can lead to problems over time. 

Your cat may be facing other types of stress. Cats are very set in their ways, and any kind of change can be upsetting for them. Moving to a new home, remodeling, adding another person or pet to the household, even a change in the weather, can all be stressful for your cat. Your cat may be having problems with another cat in the home, too, especially if the other pet is more aggressive and seems to bother him a lot.

Reducing Cat Stress

It's been shown that reducing stress in cats does reduce the frequency of cystitis in cats. It's also important to feed your cat a diet more naturally suited for felines to reduce stress on his body.

Once the puppy reaches adulthood, it builds up its own defenses. Usually, an adult dog does not require regular de worming sessions. However, as a responsible dog owner, you must keep on checking for roundworms regularly because they are not visible in the feces and they might attack the dog anytime.

In order to keep your dog healthy, it is best to give your dog proper de worming treatment every six months. This treatment keeps your dog healthy and happy and keeps you free from any anxiety related to worms.
