“Basic Principles In A Dog Lovers Club”

There are lots of dog lovers clubs in the US that offer a lot more for both the dog lovers and their dogs. Here are some of them.

The American Kennel Club has a dog lovers sections called “For the Love of the Purebred Dog”. This article is more than a canine purebred section. It is dedicated to living at home with dogs. This dog club gives informative and educational materials pertaining to pet care, training, nutrition and a lot more. It also includes funny stories, art, pet history and the more popular Companion Animal Recovery method. There are also more popular sites like the dog breeds and events page.

The American Mixed Breed Obedience Registration or (AMBOR) on the other hand was created in 1983 with the objective of taking into accounts the perseverance and accolades in obedience contests of mix breed dogs and handlers. This dog lovers club also gives support and inspiration to dog handlers.

Important Information for Members:

1. Mixed-breeds

Unlimited full membership is open to handlers and owners of mixed-breed dogs as long as the pet is spayed and nails are cut. There should be front and side photo shots of the dog that will be included in the application. This is the ticket to all the obedience and agility programs, automatic tabulation in the agility and obedience nationwide ranking system. This also includes a given eligibility for the annual awards.

This achievement will be given honor in AMBOR highlights (AMBOR’S newsletter) and on the website. The member will be eligible to any agility and obedience national competition in the future. Dogs with assigned numbers are marked as purebred and should be enlisted as a purebred. Also, dogs that are listed as mixed-breeds that are given a number based on the owner’s application causes its membership to be changed to a status of a purebred.

2. Purebreds

Purebred dogs can be listed with AMBOR with a rule that entry is limited to the AMBOR-supported agility program. All dogs that are purebred, listed with AMBOR and exhibits AMBOR-supported programs on agility will have competition points monitored and there will be an automatic issuance of certificates.

Dogs that are purebred and listed with AMBOR are not qualified to be a part of the agility and obedience scoring systems. They will also not be included in the website on highlights and not qualified for any mixed-breeds national competition in the future.

Handlers that register to the AMBOR-supported trials on agility should put their AMBOR number on the form at the club’s entrance so that competition points will be monitored.

Should I Get My Cat Neutered?

It's a question that all new kitten owners need to ask themselves so first of all I'll explain what neutering is.

What is Neutering?

In male both of the testes are removed, in female kittens the ovaries and uterus are removed. Both procedures are done under anaesthetic so during the operation your cat will feel no pain. Because the cut is so small the pain is minimal for the cats and the vet will usually administer a pain relief injection which will reduce your cats ability to feel pain while recovering from the operation.

While the cost of the procedure can be expensive and is usually around £40 each there are organisations that can help meet this cost such as the cat's protection league.

Health Benefits

They suffer less from infectious diseases
There is less likely hood of them developing breast cancers
In females since there is no uterus they can't develop life threatening illnesses such as Pyometra
In males since there are no testes they can't develop testicular cancer
Helps prevent other illnesses

Social Benefits

Female neutered felines are less likely to call (that horrible noise that they make when they are in season) and males are less likely to spray. Both sexes are less likely to wander, reducing the possibility of them getting lost or stuck in a strangers garage or shed.

Benefits for you

If you have a male kitty then their urine will not smell as strong after they've had the operation. Both sexes also require less food after the procedure so you'll save money on pet food.

Unless you are intending to become a cat breeder it is advisable to get your cat neutered, you can find out exact costs and information on care after the procedure from your local vets. If you are unable to afford the cost of neutering your cat remember to ask your vet for their advice as they should be able to put you in touch with your local cat protection league.

How to stop your dog peeing in the house..

StoryBy: Beach Bum

Does your dog pee in the house?
Here are some tips to help deal with the situation, understand what's going on, and solve the problem so you and your canine companion can remain friends.

First you need to understand the underlying cause of the problem.

A dog does not just start peeing in his own house for the fun of it. Ask yourself if your dog is peeing in the house or merely marking his territory?

A big clue is normally found in the location. If the dog is peeing against upright objects then it is probably an attempt to mark his territory. Male dogs normally cock their legs when they pee so they necessarily pee against upright objects. A good clue is the amount of urine involved. If you're drowning in the stuff it's a pretty sure bet that your dog is regarding the house as his new toilet and you need to discourage him. Should you have only small puddles to deal with, then the cause is more likely to be related to marking territory.

Copious amounts normally means the dog is urinating because he feels the need to do so and either couldn't, or didn't want to, go out. If your dog pees during the night it might be a good plan to let him drink more earlier, rather than later at night, and take him outside for a pee before going to bed.

Understanding why dogs mark their territory.

A dog has a sense of smell that is significantly more developed than that of a human. (This is one of the reasons they are used as sniffer dogs by Police Forces around the world to find explosives or drugs.) While his urine might smell offensive to humans, to other dogs it is as good as a letter. It tells them who he is, and whether he or she is available to mate. It also establishes dominance over other dogs ("I was here first, so this is my turf"ý), and helps to dispel his feelings of insecurity and builds confidence.

If your dog is struggling with confidence problems, any sudden change in his home environment can trigger this behaviour. For instance; the arrival of a new baby may mean that your dog is now not getting as much attention as previously. Changes such as this engender anxiety and may cause marking behaviour.

Do all dogs do this?

Absolutely. Small dogs are more inclined to pee inside the house than larger dogs; males are more likely to mark than females. Two or more dogs in the same house may regard each other as competition and are then more prone to marking.

While marking is a natural thing for your dog to do, he needs to understand that he is not allowed to do this inside the house.

What can you do?

If this is a recent development with a dog that has never exhibited this type of behaviour the best thing you can do is take him to the vet. It is possible that there may be an underlying medical condition, such as a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) that causes his incontinence.

Neutering at an early age can prevent the habit forming, or can stop marking behaviour. Of course neutering is not always an option should you want him to breed, but it's best to discuss this with your vet before taking any irreversible action.

You could also try the Supervision Method and try to catch him in the act. Dogs learn (much as humans do) by operational conditioning. Watch your dog closely for when he starts exhibiting signs that he might be thinking of marking. Such signs can include sniffing, or circling in spots where he has marked before. When he starts to lift his leg make some noise to distract him and get his attention. Give him a clear "NO"ý command and divert his attention. If he really needs to pee, take him outside to play ball or something, and he will do it outside the house. If he wanted to mark the distraction will have changed his mind. Remember to be consistent every time you see him exhibiting marking symptoms, or attempting to mark.

Please do not shout at him, rant or rave, or hit him at any time - you will only make the problem worse.

In order to speed up the learning process be sure to lavish praise upon him when he pees where you want him to. Dogs learn fastest from positive responses to their behaviour.

Clean the spots where he marked, or peed thoroughly, but don't use ammonia. Dog urine contains ammonia and instead of deterring him it will only make him think some other strange dog is leaving messages. Instead, use a solution of water and vinegar to wash the areas thoroughly.

If you don't make too much of a fuss over the whole thing you can easily change your dog's behaviour and get him to pee where you want him to, i.e. outside the house!

If you found this article helpful and would like to know more about modifying your dog's behaviour why don't you have a look at my Squidoo lens and feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you think.

Cancer Symptoms in Dogs and Cats

Story By: Gary Le Mon

Can you spot cancer symptoms in dogs and cats?

While it looks as though cancer affects a growing number of people in our society, it is also affecting larger numbers of our pets. It might seem like more pets are affected by cancer than in the past, but in reality we are recognizing and diagnosing the condition more frequently.

As our pets live longer and fuller lives with better medical and health care, they are being touched by cancer in much the same ways we are. A diagnosis of cancer can be confusing, but it is not always a death sentence for our cats and dogs. There are numerous areas in which one should be informed.

Cancer is not one single disease. Rather, it is an overgrowth of damaged cells that can literally spring from any tissue in the body. This means there are many different forms cancer takes. Some times the tumor is benign, or a localized tumor that does not metastasize or spread to other parts of the body. Other times it is malignant, meaning cancer cells are able to spread throughout the body by way of the bloodstream or through the vessels of the lymph system.

Most cancers are identified through a variety of different symptoms. These are quite frequently not recognized as cancer warnings by the pet owner. The American Veterinary Medical Association has identified a Top Ten list to help pet owners identify cancer symptoms in dogs and cats:

1. Abnormal swellings that persist or continue to grow
2. Sores that do not heal
3. Weight loss
4. Loss of appetite
5. Bleeding or discharge from any body opening
6. Offensive odor
7. Difficulty eating or swallowing
8. Hesitation to exercise or loss of stamina
9. Persistent lameness or stiffness
10. Difficulty breathing, urinating, or defecating

(Veterinary Cancer Society)

These symptoms are not always cancer related, but they should always be investigated, especially as a pet ages. Many kinds of cancers become more prevalent with age.

Once your pet has received a cancer diagnosis, your veterinarian will want to determine what extent the cancer or tumor is currently at. This is a conventional method of developing both a prognosis as well as the treatment protocol for your pet.

Depending on what kind of cancer it is and where it is located, a variety of tests may be performed including things like blood tests, biopsies, radiographs, ultrasounds, and endoscopy among other things.

Treatment is based solely on the type and extent of the cancer. If it is a localized tumor, surgery is one of the first actions in order to "debulk" and remove it. These tumors have the best chance of correcting.

Other times more treatment will be necessary. Additional options include radiation, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. A concerned pet owner should always ask as many questions as possible and do the right research to understand the situation. It's okay to ask for a second opinion, especially from a board certified veterinary oncologist.

There is no one right answer when treating a pet for cancer. Many factors must be weighed such as the type of cancer, the severity, the prognosis, and the quality of life. For example, if a dog or cat is an elderly animal with bone cancer, will the quality of life be good to remove a limb if the others suffer from arthritis?

In a surprisingly high number of cases the use of alternative medicine and supplements offers an excellent addition to cancer treatment. These therapies can help boost immune systems, relieve nausea, calm digestive tracts, provide necessary anti-oxidants, and remove toxins (like residue from chemotherapy) from the system.

Does Your English Bulldog Puppy Have Bad Breath?

By Melina Menny

Bad breath is not always a sign of bad dental hygiene in your English Bulldog puppy. It could be something more serious. Here are some things to look out for and how to avoid getting bad breath.

Usually, bad breath is caused by built up plaque or tartar that leaves odor-causing bacteria between the teeth, in the gums and along the tongue. This can lead to gum diseases, tooth decay and even tooth loss. That’s why brushing your English Bulldog puppy’s teeth is so important. Sometimes, even regular brushings can leave behind plaque or tartar. Talk to your vet about scheduling regular cleanings to be sure everything is healthy in your pup’s mouth.

You may be concerned if your pup’s breath smells fruity or sweet. This could mean diabetes for your English Bulldog puppy. If his breath smells like urine, it could be a sign of a problem with his kidneys. Or if he has foul breath coupled with vomiting and a yellow color to his gums and eyes, this could be a problem with his liver.

But don’t worry – it may not be something that serious at all. Sometimes, even if the teeth are clean and there are no problems with the kidneys, liver or diabetes, it could be something happening in the lungs or gastrointestinal tract. Your vet may suggest that you switch your English Bulldog puppy to another food to help with proper digestion and cut down on his bad breath.

There are many treats and bones on the market that promote healthy teeth and fresh breath. Dental health is just as important for your English Bulldog puppy as it is for us so keeping up with his teeth cleaning and vet check-ups will keep him healthy and happy!

Pet Care Insurance- Show Them You Care

Funny Pictures - Cat Gifs

Story By: Barisa Wyse

Pets especially dog and cat are known to be a favorite companion of people. They serve as a family member, best friend, or just a toy to hug each day. To be able to do this, your pets must be taken care of. Having a pet is a great duty, because like humans, they need to be in perfect condition to be in a position to perform their most basic functions.

Nevertheless, responsibility comes with a price tag. Special time, in addition to the monetary aspect of needing your pets taken to the veterinarian to undergo fundamental exams are one of the couple of factors why possessing a pet is a huge liability. Reports show that the bulk of veterinarian visits are spur-of-the-moment due to emergencies. Doing so produces a feeling of frustration to its owners because of the extra outlay of these unforeseen circumstances. Furthermore, new government mandated tests for your pets are always being applied, that leads to a more expensive health care industry.

Latest changes have revolutionized pet care industry these days. Veterinarians now have access to distinct human diagnostic resources for example magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs) and CT scans.

Diagnoses carried out for human beings 20 years ago are in reality diagnosed in animals today. Given these changes, owner-pet care expenses have increased dramatically. These costs helped to explain the rising pet care insurance acquisitions for the past ten years.

Pet care insurance helps subsidize pet care costs through reimbursements on veterinary charges, diagnostic examinations and diagnostic treatments. Nevertheless, similar to human insurance policies, pet care insurance have their exclusions such as the type of pet, breed and age.

Dogs are in fact more costly to look after rather than cats. It is because they are typically sicker, and visit vets twice as often as cats. Pure breeds are given a higher premium by most pet care insurance companies because of their unique needs, rather than cross breeds.

As well, similar to human insurance policies, the older your pet is, the higher the premium for the pet. It is suggested that you obtain a pet care insurance policy as early as feasible.

One needs to do research to obtain the most applicable pet care insurance to ones own pet. Doing research often leads to cost savings and being aware of what's the most complete plan for you and your pet.

Allow me to share some guidelines in choosing a customized pet care insurance:

1. Compare pet care insurance companies. This may assist you to find the most cost efficient pet care provider for you.

2. Set aside an sum for pet care. Setting aside a reasonable sum for medical will shield you from unexpected incidents of your pet.

3. Explore around your vicinity for inexpensive vets which provide identical services of the more expensive veterinarians. The essential thing will be the service that you need is done.

4. It will not hurt should you ask for samples. Like human insurance care, pharmaceutical companies give free samples to see if their products work. Check with your vet if there are free samples.

5. Diet. Like with people, it's less expensive for your pets if their weight is regarded as healthy, as opposed to being underweight or overweight.

6. Thoroughly evaluate your insurance policies before signing. You have to understand the fine print in pet care insurance policies so that you can completely comprehend the inclusion and exclusions within the policy.

While pet care insurance may well not appear important now, trust me when I say, that as a pet owner myself this is something which can save you from both mental and financial anguish if and whenever you possess a sick or critically hurt pet and are faced with huge veterinarian bills to guarantee your pet of the best care and treatment possible.

5 Great Tips On Building A Dog House

Product Details

Over 50% of the population allows their dog to stay indoors and sleep on the couch or in their owner’s bed. For those of you who are interested in building a dog house for you beloved pet here are some simple rules to follow when considering what type of shelter you want to provide.

Product DetailsProduct Details1. You should begin your dog house building process by making sure the house is big enough to accommodate your animal’s potential adult size. Humans enjoy having about 2 feet of air above us in a room in order to live without feeling claustrophobic. Your dog will probably also enjoy having that much room. The comfort zone for both humans and dogs is about 1/3 of their standing height. To figure out how much room the dog will need get out a tape measure and measure your dog. Measure him standing straight up, sitting on his haunches and above all measure the full dimension of the dog when he is the most comfortable, relaxed and stretched out position he can get into. Your dog should be able to look out the front entrance while both standing up and sitting. So the dog will not have to significantly lover his front shoulders or scrape his belly make sure that entrance is high enough. Stand over the dog and measure the width of the widest point of the   animal’s shoulders.

Product DetailsProduct Details2. Remember to raise the dog house several inches from the ground to allow air and water to flow underneath. To dissuade pests from invading the dog house and taking your dogs health into consideration remember how important ventilation is. Put in a few nickel-sized holes in the walls under the eaves. Install a wind block inside the house so the dog can use the heat of its own body to warm up the area if it is really cold or windy outside. Consider adding a partial wall which will allow your   dog to escape the bad weather. Your animal can choose to just sleep in the entry room or go around the inner archway maze wall into the inner sanctum.  Your beloved pet would probably love having a pillow or some sort of bedding to sleep on.
3. To avoid rain coming into the dog house make the floor just a bit slanted toward the doorway and build the roof a little bit slanted, as well. Make sure the house is well insulated but you should not paint the inside.

Product Details    4. In the United States most storms come from the south and west so make sure the dog house faces a different direction. Most dog house plans suggest that the dog house door faces east. The cold air will not be able to whip through the entryway then.

Product Details5. It is suggested that you put hinges on the roof of the dog house. This makes it easier for you to clean out your dog’s home. You should clean the dog’s house as often as you give your dog a bath.

If your dog lives outside then he deserves to have a comfortable place to sleep and get out of harsh weather. Hopefully these easy tips on building a dog house will help you get started.

Your Cat or Kitten Will Love You More, When You Follow this Guide to Feline Feeding

Funny Pictures - Cute Kittens
see more Lolcats and funny pictures

You can take the easy option and throw some discount cat feed into a bowl for your feline friend, but will she remain your friend for long if you don't give a bit more thought into what you feed her? Here is some advice that will have her purring with delight at feeding time, and keep her healthy at the same time.

In order to keep your cat or kitten healthy, you need to choose quality foods that will provide him with nutrients he needs.  But, what are they?  You can’t just give your cat any type of food that is available.  There are several things you should do to improve your cat’s nutrition.

Kitten Food

During the first few weeks, the food will come from mom cat.  But, when he begins to reach the age of four to six weeks, he needs to supplement his foods with canned kitten food or you can provide him with dry cat food that is softened with water.  At eight weeks, he should be weaned from the mother and eating kitten food solely.  The breeder at this point can allow him to be adopted and should provide you with some of the food that he is eating.  If you plan to switch brands, you can do so but make sure that you mix the food together until he is used to it.

Growing kittens will eat a good amount of food.  They are growing very fast and need it.  They will eat more than once a day.  They are likely to eat up to four smaller meals until they are six months old.  You should give him plenty of clean water as well.  Remember, kittens have smaller stomachs and need smaller amounts but use a lot of energy nonetheless.

As Your Kitten Gets Older

At six months, the cat will begin to taper off in growing.  He will likely be less active as well.  This means you can cut back to feeding him to two or three meals a day.  You should not change from kitten food to adult food since he is still growing.

At a year, you can provide him with adult food.  Adult cats will eat when they are hungry so you can simply leave a dish filled with dry food for him.  But, if he overeats and becomes overweight, he will need to be limited to eating twice a day instead.  If you give him canned food, you can still offer dry food as well.  Canned food should not be left out all day.

What Kind of Cat Food?

To purchase cat food, you should look for the types that have protein sources in the first few ingredients that are listed.  You should make sure that the food is well balanced too.  If the cat has problems that are health related look for foods designed to help with these conditions.

Many cats will enjoy both wet and dry food.  But, some are finicky about it.  If your cat does not seem to like dry cat food, moisten it or provide him with regular check ups at the vet to keep his teeth clean.  Providing well balanced food for your cat will allow him to live a healthy, long life.

Deaf Dog Hearing Aid

Story By Chaim Golan

You anticipate to listen to what is going around you. Typically you even want to listen to be alerted to danger. Deaf dogs have the same wants, however we anticipate them to adapt to life without their hearing. Some deaf dogs can, so why use  hearing aids for deaf dogsin any respect?

It is amazing what number of deaf dogs live well up into their teens these days. This is as a result of the good veterinarians and their modern techniques. As in humans, the older the dogs population will get, the more certain situations will probably be prevalent. Hearing loss is one among these conditions.

How do I find if my dog has a hearing problem ? You possibly can call him and he will not respond. Or perhaps he will, however provided that he is looking right at you. He may even gaze the wrong direction to discover you whenever you call him. You would possibly notice that he seems to be sleeping all the time, and whenever you attempt to wake him up, you possibly can not without moving him. And, identical to a toddler with hearing problems, he might be fussing with his ears or moving his head around.

Hearing aids for deaf dogs would be the solution for these problems. Some clinics provide a hearing test to deaf dogs . When the check is completed, the dog owner will know what sort of hearing loss the animal suffers from and if anything may be done about it. The clinic makes use of hearing aids for deaf dogs in a plan that involves getting the dog used to the aid. This takes a couple of month during which the loudness is slowly raised until it's at the most effective level. The hearing aids cost about $250 each. These applications for hearing aids for deaf dogs allow the deaf dogs to get settled in to using them without an excessive amount of discomfort.

One kind of hearing aids for deaf dogs is a contraption that is mounted on a dog collar. The container with the hearing aid goes on the collar and tubes go from that to a foam plug that's located in the ear of the dog. It's just like a BTE (behind the ear), hearing aid in structure. Smaller deaf dogs seem to take to these gadgets pretty well, but the larger breeds do not seem to like them as much.

Some companies supply ITE ( in the ear) hearing aids for deaf dogs. For these, the veterinary takes a mold of the deaf dog ear canal. This is dispatched in to the laboratory and a human ITE is built into it. There are some doubt whether or not a deaf dog will take to the testing and fitting and at last the hearing aids' being put in his ears is doubtful. Some will and a few won't. Many dog owners really feel that it is well worth the expense and the difficulty to try. In reality, there are some pet veterinary insurance coverage firms that pay the price for them.

Nothing is the same to a dog when he pick up the sound of his owner's voice. He will likely be safer because he's better able to notice danger. He will be happier as a result of he will not be mistaken about unnatural changes in his world that hearing loss brings. Hearing aids for deaf dogs could make their lives a lot better. To many dog owners, that's cause enough.

Don't Declaw Your Cat - A Humane Alternative

funny pictures-Tag! You're it!

Story By: Robert Sessions

If you are a cat owner, you've in all probability had a great piece of furniture or set of draperies damaged by scratching and climbing. No one wants to see their nice things destroyed, but please do not believe you must declaw your feline pals to be able to guard your furniture. Declawing cats and kittens is inhumane and pointless.

You see, a cat's claw isn't like a fingernail. A cat's claws are actually connected to the last bone in its toe. When a veterinarian removes the claw, he also removes that bone plus the joint for the next bone. Picture amputating the last bone in every one of your fingers! Declawed cats often grow to be aggressive, withdrawn or fearful.

It helps to know the reason for the behavior to be able to uncover a natural option. Cats don't scratch and climb simply because they are evil, they do it because they are cats. These are natural instinctive behaviors. The best strategy to keep kitty from scratching fixtures or climbing window treatments is to offer an alternative in the form of a cat condo or cat tree.

Give Muffy or Tiger an appropriate place to scratch and climb. Get a tough cat tree that is sufficiently tall to let him or her climb up and look down on the world. Make sure to include a scratching post of sisal rope or some equivalent materials wrapped around the trunk. Your pet cat doesn't want to ruin your furniture, he merely wants to groom his nails and climb.

It is possible to build a cat condo or buy one. In any case, explore the World wide web for design suggestions. You'll discover cat trees ranging from very basic to extremely elaborate. French Bulldog Puppies and Their Allergies

By melville jackson

It may be surprising but many dogs suffer from allergies, both environmental and food, and French Bulldogs can react very easily. You may not know how to recognize the symptoms when you don’t know what they are.

Smaller dogs and light-haired dogs are more susceptible to allergies than others, such as French Bulldog puppies with their light colored fur and small stature. Some think the small breed of a French Bulldog are more susceptible to allergies because they are closer to the ground and irritants such as grass and pollen. Their short, fine fur also allows for easy access to the skin to cause more irritation. Whatever the reason, allergies for your French Bulldog puppy are just as miserable for him as allergies are for you.

French Bulldogs puppies with environmental allergies, also called canine atopic dermatitis, are known to rub their face on carpeting or furniture, scratch at their ears and eyes more than normal and chew their feet, legs and pads. If your Frenchie is doing this, it may be because the irritants are on his skin causing itching and scratching nonstop. Try wiping his feet and face off with a damp cloth after each potty break outside. This will help to remove some of the irritants plaguing your pup. And the cold water will provide some relief to your pup’s skin.

Recurrent ear infections are also a big sign of allergies. It is best to talk to your veterinarian to determine if this is caused by allergies or a more serious ear condition. Depending on the diagnosis, your vet may recommend an ear rinse that can be bought at any pet store. This will help to wash out any allergens that may be lingering in the ear canal as well as washing away any dirt. Your French Bulldog puppy can be especially prone to ear infections because of the large size of his ears. The ears could be trapping in irritants, pollens and other allergens in the air to wreak havoc in the ear canal.

Now that you know the symptoms, your French Bulldog puppy scratching all of the furniture and chewing his feet may not be such a big mystery. Now it’s time to take action against the allergens!

Human Foods That Are Toxic For Cats

funny pictures of cats with captions

By: Anna B O`Brien

We all use to be guilty of it. Admit it. We have given our cat table scraps from our plate. You love your cat. Showing that you love him/her is usually by giving into what they want.

When your cat is begging for a piece of turkey or any other goodie on your plate you do what all animal lovers do you give in and let your cat have what they want.

The only problem with doing that is you may be giving your cat food that could be harmful to cats.

First, it is best to train your cat not to be at the table when you or anyone else is eating. It is just good manners. You do not want to have company and have your cat begging at the table.

The main reason for not feeding your cat table scraps is much more important, and here is why.

For example: you are having a turkey dinner. Is their gravy on your turkey and do you feed a piece of that turkey to your cat.

You could be harming your cat.

Many types of gravy have onion-flavored broth and onions like garlic and other root vegetables are among the list of foods that cats should never eat.

Potatoes that are raw as well as green tomatoes also can be harmful to your cat. So when peeling potatoes if any fall on the floor make sure your cat does not get a hold of it.

Tomatoes that are green are harmful especially the stems and leaves. They contain toxins that are dangerous for cats. Unlike ripe tomatoes, those have no danger to your cat.

Chocolate
I think by now we know that chocolate is just plain bad for animals. It is deadly for dogs and cats. Keep it away from all pets.

Milk
We have all seen movies and read books where people put out a saucer of milk for cats. That is wrong and should not be done.

I am not saying that milk is toxic or dangerous to cats. It just does not have a purpose for cats that have a healthy diet.

It can have side effects for them that are extremely uncomfortable.
In addition, many cats are lactose-intolerant and milk can make them have diarrhea and an upset stomach.

There are products on the market designed for cats that are better for them then milk. One such product is called Catsip. It is available in many supermarkets and has better nutritional value for your cat. Therefore, if you have a cat that just loves milk try this instead.

Last two foods that may cause harm to your cat are grapes and raisins.
They seem to have an adverse effect on many cats, so the ASPCA has recommended that you keep these two foods away from your cat.

Therefore, when your cat comes begging give him/her a treat that was made for cats. There is any number of healthy treats available now that you can safely give that will make your cat happy and you will not have to worry about toxic side effects.

Remember our pets think we know what we are doing and depend on us to keep them safe. That is the least we can do since we are so fortunate to have these wonderful animals in our life.

Why Do People Choose The German Shepard As Their Dog

German Shepherds requires a lot of time, stimulation, training and exercise
Story by: Steve Rankin

Dogs called German Shepherds were first exhibited at shows in Germany towards the end of the nineteenth century but they were hardly Shepherds as we know them today being rough coated, short tailed and rather resembling mongrels. The German Shepherd Dog as we now know it didn't really appear until after the Second World War.

The breed has grown enormously in popularity and is now one of the most popular pedigree breeds in the UK as a pet, it is still the favourite working breed for many forces especially the police and they are widely used for security purposes.

It is a fine sight to see a well-trained GSD with his handler, working well to serve and protect. Unfortunately one of the saddest sites is the poor GSD used to guard premises often chained up alone in some dismal filthy yard with a lifetime of incarceration and little stimulation to look forward to.

The German Shepherd is a highly intelligent beast who will show undying devotion to his master but he is a dog that needs company and stimulation to be at his best.

If you are thinking of buying a German Shepherd as a pet and you have not previously owned one, it is important to research the breed and talk to experienced owners so that you fully understand what you are taking on.
GSD's do indeed make wonderful family pets but it is important to remember that this is a working breed and that they do have certain characteristics that can make them more difficult than your average Retriever, Labrador or Collie.

The characteristics of a good working GSD should be firmness of nerve, attentiveness, unshockability, tractability, watchfulness, reliability, and incorruptibility together with courage tenacity and hardness.
A German Shepherd is naturally protective and territorial which is something to bear in mind if you have lots of visitors to your house when careful introduction may be required to assure your pet that the visitor is not a threat to his family.

This is also a breed that requires a lot of time, stimulation, training and exercise - you will never wear them out, they will always be ready for more. A bored, lonely GSD can be very destructive and can cause an awful lot of damage to property in a short space of time.

Perhaps some of the less endearing traits of this breed are the tendency to be very vocal which can be a big nuisance and may be a problem with neighbours. They also shed hair in copious amounts all year round so your vacuum cleaner will work overtime and it's unlikely that your clothes and furnishings will ever be free of dogs hairs again as well as what you are eating invariably being contaminated with that stray hairs.

The biggest problem with the German Shepherd Dog is the fact that to a large extent the breed is being spoilt by irresponsible breeding by inexperienced back street breeders who care nothing about preserving the breed but only about making money from the selling of puppies, Health and temperament problems are all too common, so it is important to take expert advice and try and find a reputable source if you are contemplating buying a puppy.

Consider first taking on a rescue German Shepherd Dog from a reputable rescue that should be able to give you a good assessment of a particular dog. Remember too that an older GSD will be a very rewarding addition to the family and will be housetrained, won't chew, well behaved, probably require less exercise than a young dog and will be very loyal and grateful.

Cat Urine Smell - - 3 Steps to Getting Relief From Feline Urine Odor

Story by: Debbie Davis

Removing cat urine odor can sometimes seem impossible, particularly if your cat pees in a spot that's hard to find or reach. Here are 3 effective steps to take to remove cat odor safely and effectively.

1. Find the spot. This can be a challenge if your cat urinated while you were away, and the spot has had time to dry and is hard to see. Use a black light to help you locate the offending spot. A black light is best used when it's relatively dark and the urine spots will glow brightly when the black light shines on them.

2. Neutralize the area. There's no shortage of suggestions, ideas and products that are designed to get rid of cat urine. Choose a product that is safe for your cat (and you), and that breaks down the urine rather than adding another smell to cover the urine odor.

3. Use an air purifier designed to remove cat urine odor. Realize that with a cat in the family mistakes will happen, and even if you find and neutralize the spot, while you're completing the process your home still smells like cat urine.

If you've inherited your space from another owner who had cats, short of removing the carpet and refinishing wood floors, there may be spots that you will never find, but the odor will persist. The right air purifier is a safe, non-invasive, and continuous way to keep the air smelling clean.

Check the technical specifications to make sure that the cleaner you're considering has a filter that will remove urine odor. If it is unclear about this or doesn't specify, it probably will not do the job. Call the company to inquire about the filter make-up that makes it effective against urine.

Look for references from those who have used the product. Professional and personal references listed with the product are an excellent indication of who has used the product and how successful it has been.

For instance, if a groomer, kennel, or rescue organization is currently using the product, it's a pretty good indicator that those who have a need that is probably greater than yours have found the product to be effective.

However, nothing will tell you how well it will work for you in your space with your cat until it's in your space with your cat. Make sure you understand the return policy, but chances are, if there is a good return policy your won't need it.

Ear Infections in Dogs

funny pictures of dogs with captions

Story by: Kelly Marshall

If you have ever suffered from an inner ear infection then you understand the pain and discomfort that it can cause. Thankfully, people can communicate their agony and contact a doctor for help. Unfortunately, a dog cannot do the same. Therefore, it is strictly up to the pet's owner to identify the discomfort from an ear infection and take the animal to the vet for treatment.

A middle or inner ear infection is a condition that needs to be given attention and treated promptly. If left untreated for a lengthy amount of time, the condition can worsen. It is extremely important to take notice of any signs that your dog exhibits that may indicate a problem with the ear.

There are several different indicators that may lead one to suspect that a dog is experiencing pain from an ear infection. Many dogs will shake their heads in attempt to knock out the agony. Others may scratch at their heads and ears to try to comfort them. In extreme cases, you may even notice a discharge coming from the ear or the head may appear swollen and inflamed. The ear may even have a bad odor from the infection build-up inside of it.

When a dog has a middle or inner ear infection, it is usually caused from an problem that began outside of the ear and progressed inward. For this reason, it is critical to quickly treat any types of infections that are visible on the outer ear. These infections can be contributed to ear mites, poor hygiene, allergies, or filthy living conditions. Most ear infections in dogs are not bacterial as those found in humans.

Dogs with ears that flop over are especially susceptible to getting infections of the ear. If you own a pet, such as a cocker spaniel, that has floppy ears, it is important to keep the ears properly groomed. During each cleaning, check the dog's ears for any signs of infections. You will also want to carefully clip the hairs around the inner ear to prevent debris from becoming trapped.

If you believe that your canine may have an infection in his ear, you should contact your vet. The doctor will give the dog an otoscopic exam to confirm the problem. An x-ray of the dog's head may also be needed. In some cases, the dog may need to be sedated in order for the doctor to give a thorough exam and flush the ear.

Most vets will treat an ear infection in a dog with a form of oral antibiotic. In some cases, a cream or ointment that is either antibiotic or anti-fungal will also be prescribed. It is typically suggested that you put drops in the dog's ear to control the discomfort. It is extremely important to clean the ear before applying medicines. Ear mites will also need to be treated if present.

Ear infections can lead to very serious conditions if left untreated. In some cases, these conditions call for treatment though surgery. To prevent your pet from getting an ear infection, keep the pet properly groomed and treat ear mites as soon as they are noticed. If you feel that your pet may have an ear infection, contact your vet as soon as possible.
